According to the Wall Street Journal, the South Korean giant Samsung plans to launch a foldable smartphone in early 2019. The prototype is codenamed “Winner” and measures 7 inches when open. The screen can be folded in half “like a wallet”, showing a small bar-shaped display on the front, in addition to the cameras at the rear. The initial launch would be on a smaller scale for specific markets and would gain a wider debut in the second half of 2019 if it succeeds. This device could be the start of a new category of products, next to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. Sources tell the WSJ that the South Korean giant Samsung wants to be the first company to produce a folding screen phone. Top executives have given this project a higher priority in recent months. The idea is to combat the weak sales of smartphones; it predicts a below-expected profit due to the Galaxy S9. The price could “easily exceed $1,500”, however, the South Korean giant Samsung bet that the novelty factor would be enough to convince some customers. Some companies have already launched folding smartphones, such as ZTE Axon M: it has two screens that can work as one. Now, the South Korean giant Samsung, in turn, prepares a mobile phone whose unique display can be folded in half.
We saw at CES 2013 the South Korean giant Samsung’s first concept for a smartphone that turns into a tablet.
